Preparing your CV/resume | How to attract Google's attention

I'll Let you in on a public secret that no one looks at much. But its there.. So This is how Google wants (would like) you to prepare your resume to attract their attention when applying for a job there.

I got this information from this link: http://www.google.com/intl/en/jobs/africa/joininggoogle/resume/index.html

Preparing your CV/resume

Submitting a CV/resume – General information

To make it easier for us to determine where you might best fit within our organization, you can take a few simple steps to help us understand your qualifications.

  • Preferably submit your resume in PDF or Microsoft Word formats. Text formats are also acceptable.
  • All resumes and related materials (transcripts, portfolios, etc.) should be submitted in English.
  • Only include essential personal information and be sure to include your name and how to contact you in the resume, not just your cover letter. Also, include your email, phone, and city and state of residence. Do NOT include your gender, date of birth, age, family status, military status, citizenship status or personal identification numbers.
  • If you use acronyms, spell them out once unless they are well known in industry.

Educational background

Your CV/resume should accurately reflect your academic achievements and accomplishments.

  • Your resume should include the full name of all post-secondary institutions attended, degrees conferred, and a cumulative grade point average (if available) for each degree received.
  • Only report your college/university-level education. However, if you completed a "year abroad" program as part of your pre-university education, feel free to include this in your resume.
  • Provide a brief description of projects you completed related to the position for which you are applying.

Your work experience

You may be fresh out of college/university or have substantial work experience and a history of accomplishments. Either way, we want to know what skills you've acquired along the way. We'll look closely at the work experience section of your resume, so the information you provide here is very important.

  • Provide your job title, employer name and dates of employment.
  • Provide a brief description of the companies you have worked for especially if they are not well known.
  • Provide your specific “key accomplishments” in each role.
  • We want to see concise (ie. bulleted), important details on your key accomplishments and the impact your efforts had on your company. For engineering resumes, please include the programming languages and tools used for each.
  • If you worked while attending a college/university, either during the summer or concurrent with your course work, be sure to mention this even if it isn't specifically related to a potential job at Google.
  • Customize your resume by highlighting the skills that are relevant to the position.

Additional information

Tell us what makes you unique! Here at Google, we value talent and intelligence, group spirit and diversity, creativity and idealism. Googlers range from former neurosurgeons and puzzle champions to alligator wrestlers and Lego maniacs.

  • Be sure to include any awards received, articles published, conference presentations given, or professional organizations you are involved in (ie. SWE, IEEE, ACM, etc.). We don't need to see copies of awards or publications, just a reference to them.
  • You can also include personal projects related to the position.

CV's Very Important!

Have you been looking for a job and not being called for an interview? Well I am hoping to help you on this short note.

I was doing short listing four weeks ago for intern positions and I noticed some strange pattern. People are not taking job searching seriously. Seriously!

How do you apply for a job, and not attach your CV???? How? How will the possible future employer know about your skills? They definitely know you are looking for a job, but have no idea what you will be able to do and/or what you have done before!

So I came up with the following points which I hope will be of help for someone out there trying to find a job.

1. Be serious. It reflects on your application.

2. You need to have Curriculum Vitae (CV). I cannot emphasize that point enough. No doubt, a must have.

3. You need to be very clear about your skills on your CV. The person short listing should not be left wondering, or asking questions about your skills and capabilities. Tell them everything you can about what you can do. But use wisdom to make it interesting enough to want to call you. 4. Your CV needs to be impressive and

a) Neat, have categories e.g. personal, experience, education. Etc. Well labeled, good uniform font.

b) Have a good name don’t just name your cv ‘cv’ use a familiar name like ‘my name cv’.

c) Focus on your skills, Brief but let somebody know what you can do.

5. You NEED, NEED to have a body text in your email. Don’t just say attached please find my CV. Tell your employee

a) What job you are applying for

b) Why you think you are the best for this job

c) That you have attached your official documents, and can be contacted for more information.

Sometimes it is also to tailor your CV depending on what the job you are applying for requires.

One last thing, Good luck, you will need it.
